Planning a Dream Wedding at an English Country House Estate: Everything You Need to Know

UK

You might not expect an expert English country house wedding planner to be based in Chicago. But this is the dual aspect of K&K Celebrates; we spend half our time immersed in spectacular Chicagoan weddings and the rest living out our historical venue fairytales across England and Scotland!

There is so much we love about planning a wedding at a historic English Country House Estate. The indoor-outdoor flow enabled by these grand, once-domestic spaces. The connection with locality - eating seasonal and fresh farm-to-table produce from local farms. The scenic landscapes and natural backdrops as they intersect with statuesque historical architecture. The romantic charm of bringing Georgian, Edwardian, Victorian spaces to life. It’s all so dreamy!

When it comes to planning a wedding at an historic English country house, there are many elements to consider. For us, a key element for example would include onsite accommodation for your closest family and friends.

Below, we’ll break down everything you need to know about planning a dream wedding at an English Country House Estate, using two prominent estates we love to work at - Somerley House, and Sennowe Park.

Planning a dream wedding at Somerley House

Modernised with an eye on comfort and providing a warm welcome, Somerley House combines impressive Georgian grandeur with a unique feeling of comfort and friendliness.

Accommodating up to 140 guests for a ceremony inside and the capacity for marquee celebrations across their extensive grounds catering to larger guest lists, Somerley is an incredibly scenic wedding venue, and its tranquil, sprawling grounds feel like your own private paradise.

Located on the border of Hampshire and Dorset in the South of England, Somerley is located near Ringwood, in the epitome of English countryside.

Somerley Estate: Accommodation

Hiring the house provides you with accommodation for your closest family and friends within its beautiful bedrooms, each with an aspect overlooking the surrounding parkland.

Original features have been sensitively restored and celebrated, and antique furniture and artworks have been chosen to complement them. All this ensures that the Somerley Estate feels like a home full of soul.

The main house includes nine double bedrooms (and seven bathrooms), accommodating up to 18 adults (with additional z-beds available for children), with an additional three properties available onsite to house further guests. Additional accommodations are available with nearby estate properties, such as Ellingham Farmhouse.

Somerley Estate: Guest Capacity

With six licensed ceremony locations available onsite, Somerley truly provides versatility for you to summon the celebration of your dreams.

We love this flexibility. It allows us freedom in creating the flow of your event, and how easy and effortless it feels for your guests to move from one moment to the next.

Of the six available, our two favorite ceremony locations are the Picture Gallery and the Garden Colonnade.

The Picture Gallery

Somerley’s Picture Gallery is guaranteed to transport you back in time. The history and heritage of this space is remarkable; it feels like an honor to weave the threads of your wedding weekend into a tapestry which is already so long, varied, and rich.

The Picture Gallery can accommodate a seated reception for up to 140 guests at round tables, or 80-100 at rectangular ones.

The Garden Colonnade

The Garden Colonnade and East Terrace create a wonderful outdoor flow. Connecting the grandeur of the house with the manicured lawns, the Garden Colonnade allows that perfect intersection of history and nature; the masculine statuesque grandeur of the house with the soft femininity of their awe-inspiring gardens, the historic importance of your singular event with the idea that this is just a beautiful moment in the evolution of this historic place.

Somerley’s formal gardens will leave a lasting impression - their fairytale magic continues to live with us from the events we’ve planned here. The Triton Fountain adds the tranquil sound of water to an atmosphere replete with winding tendrils and romantic perfumed blooms, and so a marquee event can be the ideal solution for larger guest counts as you have the privilege of immersing yourself in the majesty of this outdoor space.

Why host your wedding weekend at Somerley House?

Somerley House is the perfect blend of comfort and luxury. Instead of feeling imposing, this estate feels like a warm embrace when the house comes into view, despite its grandeur.

Serenity instantly takes over, and a calming atmosphere is everything you need with the anticipation of the best day of your lives ahead of you!

We love to create wedding atmospheres that our clients can completely submerge themselves in - their own bubble that remains untouched and perfect throughout. Somerley is the perfect venue for this - your own moment as lord and lady of the manor, surrounded by those you love and immersed in beauty.

With full, exclusive use of the house, it will truly feel like your home for your entire wedding weekend; it’s a beautiful escape for your closest friends and family.

Planning a dream wedding at Sennowe Park

This grand Edwardian country house is located in rural North Norfolk, in the scenic flat fens of the South East of England.

Winding along the mile of drive and then catching sight of the Italianate garden terraces with verdant parkland stretching beyond and down to the lake, Sennowe’s romance will capture you as soon as you arrive.

An exclusive-use private family home, Sennowe Park only accepts a small number of weddings each year, ensuring that your wedding combines the formality of a country estate with the personality and humanity of a real home, making your celebrations feel truly unique, and truly yours.

All arrangements are made bespoke to your needs, whether that’s laying on a rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding for those staying in the house, or perhaps enjoying a lunch in the Winter Garden the day after the wedding to soak up the atmosphere of your spectacular weekend.

Sennowe Park: Accommodation

Sennowe Park can accommodate the bride and groom and their closest friends and family across seven luxurious double (or twin) bedrooms, all ensuite. That’s 14 guests in the main house, and the fairytale magic of the Boat House can accommodate another four.

It is only a 20-minute drive from both Norwich and King’s Lynn train stations, so it’s fairly accessible too, and is also only a 30-minute drive from Norwich International Airport.

Sennowe Park: Guest Capacity

The 70ft Edwardian conservatory known as the Winter Garden can accommodate up to 120 guests, allowing you to quickly pivot your outdoor ceremony if rain makes an appearance, or indeed make the most of the glorious natural surroundings in comfort during the colder months.

The decorative floor and central marble fountain make this an idyllic space of indoor/outdoor unity.

For larger guest counts, a marquee can be utilized on the grounds, which allows the backdrop of this spectacular English country house estate to complement the versatility a marquee affords.

Sennowe Park: Features

Sennowe Park has a heated swimming pool that is available for summer weddings. It makes the ‘morning after’ another perfect day of rest and relaxation as part of your wedding weekend - the perfect moment for sharing stories and reminiscing about the events of the previous day.

Why host your wedding weekend at Sennowe Park?

Sennowe Park is simply magnificent! Not only in its architectural design, but also in the way it makes you feel when you enter through its iron gate - this is truly historic majesty and immersion in the magic of a different era. It’s the perfect escape for a wedding weekend; one that can be created completely bespoke to you.

There is a sense of privacy and exclusivity that comes with Sennowe still being a private home, and because of the way they strictly limit the number of weddings they take on each year. Even though it’s in rural Norfolk, travel is not intimidating for your friends and family, as it feels completely remote and rural but is in fact accessible by road, train and plane.

Country house weddings are renowned for that historic, Bridgerton-esque feel. But there’s more to it than roleplaying a time-gone-by. Planning a wedding at an English Country House Estate allows you to set your once-in-a-lifetime celebrations against a rich tapestry of time; setting your moment against history itself. The best country estates allow you to truly feel the locality, too, allowing manicured gardens and the rolling fields beyond to truly ground you in the when and where of your perfect moment.
